Ngā Kapa Taumata Teitei, Māori Performing Arts Australia Incorporated is
pleased to announce that 2 Kapa Haka Groups will represent Australia at the prestigious Te Matatini Society
Incorporated National Kapa Haka competitions to be held at the Blue Chip
Stadium, Tauranga Moana, in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in February 2009.
The winning team, Poi Piripi from Victoria
and the 2nd placed team, Te Roopu Tautoko from Queensland
were selected following fierce competition from the 6 competing kapa haka teams
who travelled to Melbourne from all over Australia
The day was filled with vibrant and exciting performances to a packed
house, royalty, dignitaries and judges from all over Australia
and New Zealand.
The other competing teams, Wairua Tīpuna from WA, Aka Matua from
VIC, Te Rereārangi from NSW and Ngā Manu Waiata from
VIC all performed to their maximum for the mantel of representing Australia.
Ronald Briggs conducted the Aboriginal smoking ceremony that opened the
event. Margaret Wirrapunda and Frances Mathyssen the local tangata whenua
(original indigenous owners of the land) completed the ‘Welcome to Country'
ceremony for all in attendance.
Excellent feedback was received from the dignitaries from New Zealand and Australia. Our Māori King, Te
Arikinui Tuheitia, Patron of Te Matatini NZ; the Hon Mahara Okeroa MP,
Associate Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage NZ; Dr Pita Sharples,
co-leader of the Māori party and MP for Tāmaki Makaurau; Mrs Arapera Sharples, renowned Maori Performing
Arts exponent; Puka Moeau, host of Taka Tu and renowned kapa exponent;
Mrs Donna Mariana Grant, renowned tutor, performer and exponent of Māori
Performing Arts representing Te Matatini Society Inc; Jill Morgan,
Executive Officer Multicultural Arts Victoria; Shona Bleakley, NZ Consul
General; Matt Rua, Melbourne Storm to name a few.
A variety of exciting entertainers
including Fusian Hip-Hop Dance Troupe; Tūmanako Māori Cultural Entertainment
Group from NSW/ACT; Pride of the Cook Islands; 7th
Heaven; and Streetwise entertained at the presentation after function.
The Chairman of NKTT, Isaac Cotter thanked the Victorian Māori Festival
Committee (VMFC) as they worked hard with NKTT and many volunteers to make this
event the success that it was. He also acknowledges the VMFC as they celebrate
their 25th Jubilee of Kapa Haka in Victoria this year.
